On the Local Uprisings: Statement from Red Bloom

In the coming weeks and months, Regeneration Magazine will attempt to bring reports and analysis from groups and individuals on the ground supporting the growing resistance to racist violence and police tyranny. Red Bloom is a Marxist Center affiliated organization with members participating in the ongoing protests.

Statement on Nationwide Demonstrations

On May 25th, George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, with the help of Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas K. Lane. This comes after the murder of Breonna Taylor by Louisville, Missouri police, and Ahmaud Arbery by two white men in Georgia with connections to the local police, and before the murder of Tony McDade by the Tallahassee, Florida police on May 27th.

We recognize these atrocities not as isolated incidents or as indications of a need for reform, but acts of the racist violence inherent to policing and to capitalism itself. As COVID-19 throws into sharp relief the gaping disparities between those who can access well-being and those who are denied it, it remains overwhelmingly clear that we must resist state-sanctioned violence and fight for the abolition of the police force, in addition to free housing, healthcare, and other demands.

Red Bloom unconditionally supports the demonstrations in Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago, New York City, and around the nation as well as the world, and encourages all who can to participate. We stand against not only the brutal repression by the police and by the far-right government, but also sharply denounce the mealy-mouthed equivocations by Mayor Bill de Blasio, Governor Andrew Cuomo, and other elected officials who place a higher value on property, order, and “civility” than on Black lives in action, regardless of their rhetoric.

We urge everyone who can to donate to bail funds, jail support funds etc (and list them here).
